All of Bobby Hall's books are full of exercises for guitarists to play. This book contains exercises that outline the common chords in the open position including all simple major, minor, and dominant chords. Each set of exercises features a new chord and gives the aspiring guitarist a chance to play the chord in a context that features how that specific chord sounds and how that specific chord relates to other easy, beginner chords. The definition of each chord is included in each exercise. A beginning can be made in this book for understanding a functional number system for chords. Number systems related to chords are common throughout all genres of music. The Nashville numbers system is used in Nashville. Colleges, universities and other academic institutions use numbers to relate music theory and chords. Gospel, jazz, country, rock, and blues musicians use numbers to relate chords. This book gives a basic, beginner look at how to relate numbers to chords in an easy and understandable manner. The format is sure to help the beginning guitarist to memorize chords, chord names, their sound quality, as well as relate those chords to a functional number system. If the student has a creative flare, they will also be able to use the chord exercises for writing songs. The sound quality of each chord and the chords that relate well to it are perfect examples for finding chords that sound good together for your own songs.
